My blog has moved... please update your links:

My Adventures in Motherhood

June 06, 2008

I forgot to mention:

My parents are moving to BC. They bought a house on their last trip out there and now are attempting to sell their house here.

6 days

is apparently what consitutes as "soon" in my vocabulary. Yup, I'm a slacker!

So, Skills Canada was okay this year. It was a little more disorganized than usual because both Provincials and Nationals were held in Calgary (in preparation for World Skills 2009) - usually Provincials is in Edmonton, where it basically runs itself due to years of experience there. I still am not impressed with the person who I basically report to. However, I told my fellow judge that I would not quit after this year because Calgary is not a "typical" year. So, next year could very well be my last year volunteering with Skills Canada. Plus, I'm hoping to get involved with Nationals next year as they are in PEI! The National board pays travel expenses, otherwise I wouldn't even be considering it (speaking of which, I need to fax in my expense report).

It took me about a week to recover from my week in Calgary (Logan too)! Lack of sleep, a bit of stress... it made for a very tired me.

While we were in Calgary, Logan cut his first tooth. It's his bottom-left front tooth. Man, is that thing sharp! I'm kind of sad... no more "gummy" smiles... but, he's still adorable. :)

This weekend I'm playing in a slo-pitch tournament with people from work. It's supposed to rain all weekend. Grrr... Logan is staying with my sister-in-law (the one that babysits him when I'm at work) and James is hoping to get most of our new fence built. I need to get my butt in gear and get packed - I still haven't decided what time I'm leaving today. My team (we have two teams in the tourney) has a game at 7:30pm, but I want my tent set up before the game (as it will be dark after). If my tent leaks, I'll sleep in the van! ;) I need to stop and pick up another tarp before I leave town.

Speaking of slo-pitch... I'm the pitcher (which I love). This position, however, does come with a bit more risk sometimes. Example - a line-drive approximately 1 foot off the ground directly at me! I got smoked in the shin (last Thursday)... ouch! I'm really good at either catching or deflecting balls that are knee-high and up, but that one was a little low. Do I ever have a pretty bruise. The guy felt really, really bad for hitting me (I saw him again last night and he asked how I was doing). It didn't hurt as much as I thought it would - it would have been much worse if I got hit in my ankle or knee. Oh well, them's the breaks!

I'm *finally* getting a laptop at work... soon. The ones for general sign-out suck - they can barely run MS Office and I need one that runs AutoCAD. Once I have that, I'll actually be able to do work from home again - the projects I'm working on require a computer, as I'm not just checking drawings anymore (thank goodness).

Well, I really need to get packing... and I should put something other than my PJ's on before the delivery guys get here with our fence supplies. Have a great weekend everyone!

I will update...

...I promise!

(Skills Canada was overall, pretty good. Will elaborate soon.)

I'm such a slacker...

...in more ways than one! If you think I'm bad at posting on my blog, you should see the disaster that is my house. *sigh* Also, I haven't lost a single pound in 2 months... but on the flip side, I also haven't gained one either. Just yo-yo-ing.

Anyways, just a quick note to say that this coming 2 weeks is going to be crazy busy. It's Skills Canada time again and both the provincial and national competitions are in Calgary this year. This means I'm basically not home from Wednesday afternoon of this week until Tuesday night of next week. Ack!

In addition to that, Logan and I start a Sing & Sign (baby sign language class centred around songs) class Tuesday morning followed by work Tuesday afternoon and then ball Tuesday night. I'm tired just thinking about tomorrow!

Oh yeah... I'm now 28. Hip hip hooray. Oh, I forgot... sarcasm doesn't translate well in writing. ;) Another year older, another year wiser (in theory, anyways).

OMG...

The movie August Rush is simply amazing. There is no other way to describe it. Even Logan sat enthralled and actually watched the majority of it before falling asleep (I think it was the music that kept him entertained). I will own this movie and soundtrack. No question about it.

Almost forgot...

A few things I forgot to mention:

1. Didn't win the Stars Lottery dream home (or the $1 million prize). Boo.
2. Montreal is the only hope for the Cup to come back to Canada this year. What's up with that?
3. Grey's Anatomy is a new episode tonight. It's about darn time... I'm going through McDreamy with drawl! ;)

Weight loss/fitness... not going so well. Can also be attributed to my severe disorganization and lack of motivation. But, I am close to my pre-pregnancy weight. I heard one "expert" say that it takes you 9 months to put on the weight, so expect 9 months to take it off again. Thus, I'm doing okay. I just wish I had the motivation to get my flabby butt to the gym! After all, I am paying for my membership. *sigh*

Where does the time go?

Wow... I meant to write a somewhat thorough post 3 weeks ago. Oh my! Where does the time go? I can't even claim to be all that busy - just severely disorganized and lacking motivation. But, hopefully those days will be over soon (they must come to an end before September). I ordered Organizing For Your Brain Type: Finding Your Own Solution to Managing Time, Paper, & Stuff so I'm hoping it will be a worth-while purchase.

Oh the craziness! So, the Canadian government has decided that bisphenol A (BPA) is dangerous - and especially so for those under 18 months of age. They are claiming to be the first country to "take action against BPA". Really? If by action, you mean a possible ban on using the substance in baby bottles, sippy cups, etc. that will take a year to be put in place. And in the meantime? Thankfully retailers are stepping up to the plate, so to speak, more aggressively than the government. Most major retailers (Wal-Mart, HBC, Babies/Toys R Us, etc.) have removed all baby products that contain BPA. Some are even buying back the tainted products in an effort to help affected parents. Other retailers (MEC, Canadian Tire, etc.) have removed the hard plastic water bottles (ie: Nalgene bottles) that contain BPA. There are questions as to how much is dangerous... if it's only when the bottle is heated or used to store liquid/foods (there is BPA in the lids of baby food jars!)... but, in my opinion... better to be safe than sorry. If I can make sure that Logan's bottles, sippy cups, and soothers don't have BPA I think he'll be better off in the long run. I'm sure there are some toys that find their way to his mouth that may contain it, but I don't think I'll be able to figure out all things that have it in our house.

Speaking of Logan... oh my... he is 7 months old already! Again... where the heck does time go?! He's sitting up pretty much on his own (he can't sit up from lying down, but when placed in a sitting position, he stays there) now. He would love to crawl, but hasn't quite figured it out yet. He is "blowing raspberries" - in other words, he is very slobbery. And, to add to the slobber - no teeth yet, but definitely teething (which could go on for months yet)! He went to the pediatrician and then got his head ultrasounded (which isn't a word, I'm sure) because his head circumference is off the charts for his age. Yes... my son has a big head! But, if you keep in mind that he is in the 95th percentile for weight, his head isn't all that big. The test came back fine and the doctor said he simply has a big head with lots of brains! :)

Homemade baby food is the best. For one... no worries about BPA, preservatives, excess salt, etc. Also, it actually tastes good. If your baby doesn't eat all their food, you don't mind finishing it for them (can't say the same for the store-bought stuff). Logan will not eat store-bought veggies. He will eat store-bought fruit, which is fine by me - there are fruits available that I normally wouldn't buy and they are handy. I have some freezer trays and recipe books and I make most of my own baby food and freeze it (veggies and some fruits). We haven't tried any meats yet (he gets his iron from his baby cereal/pablum and formula). I also have a little food grinder (sort of like this one) that I think I'm going to start using. It's basically for making single-servings of food. You can grind up meat, veggies, fruit... whatever you are eating and feed it to baby. It's small enough that you can take it with you to a restaurant if you're eating out and baby is with you. Soon he'll start getting more textured foods, but I'm not ready for that yet! ;)

What else to tell you? Hmmm... I'm working 1/2 a day per week (Monday mornings) and then I sometimes take a little bit of work home with me for the week. I enjoy my time in the office - it keeps me connected (I was feeling very disconnected from my office), keeps my brain a little sharper, and gives me a little bit of time with adults! This way I can ease my way back into work slowly. After the September long weekend, I plan to work 3 days per week. Since my employer allows me to work 1/2 a day per week, I don't think they'll have a problem with my working 3 days per week!

Well, this post is getting long-winded (though sorely over due). Here are some pictures for those who aren't on Facebook:

I can't breathe!

I either have a cold or allergies... can't decide which... don't care... can't breathe... no energy. Frick. Thus, a short post writting in short sentences.

- Logan is over 6 months old. Where the heck did time go?

- Am enjoying work. Am there Monday mornings (4 hours) and then take stuff home with me. Work max. 10 hours per week.

- Home made baby food is the way to go! (I will post more on this topic when I do a longer post.)

- Van got vandalized by a punk kid. Am annoyed. Easily fixed. Not the point. (Now have "Jade" scratched into my driver's side door with a backwards "J".)

- Hoping to win Stars Lottery dreamhome. Winners posted on Saturday.

I think I wanted to say something else, but my brain is fried.
