Oh the craziness! So, the Canadian government has decided that bisphenol A (BPA) is dangerous - and especially so for those under 18 months of age. They are claiming to be the first country to "take action against BPA". Really? If by action, you mean a possible ban on using the substance in baby bottles, sippy cups, etc. that will take a year to be put in place. And in the meantime? Thankfully retailers are stepping up to the plate, so to speak, more aggressively than the government. Most major retailers (Wal-Mart, HBC, Babies/Toys R Us, etc.) have removed all baby products that contain BPA. Some are even buying back the tainted products in an effort to help affected parents. Other retailers (MEC, Canadian Tire, etc.) have removed the hard plastic water bottles (ie: Nalgene bottles) that contain BPA. There are questions as to how much is dangerous... if it's only when the bottle is heated or used to store liquid/foods (there is BPA in the lids of baby food jars!)... but, in my opinion... better to be safe than sorry. If I can make sure that Logan's bottles, sippy cups, and soothers don't have BPA I think he'll be better off in the long run. I'm sure there are some toys that find their way to his mouth that may contain it, but I don't think I'll be able to figure out all things that have it in our house.
Speaking of Logan... oh my... he is 7 months old already! Again... where the heck does time go?! He's sitting up pretty much on his own (he can't sit up from lying down, but when placed in a sitting position, he stays there) now. He would love to crawl, but hasn't quite figured it out yet. He is "blowing raspberries" - in other words, he is very slobbery. And, to add to the slobber - no teeth yet, but definitely teething (which could go on for months yet)! He went to the pediatrician and then got his head ultrasounded (which isn't a word, I'm sure) because his head circumference is off the charts for his age. Yes... my son has a big head! But, if you keep in mind that he is in the 95th percentile for weight, his head isn't all that big. The test came back fine and the doctor said he simply has a big head with lots of brains! :)
Homemade baby food is the best. For one... no worries about BPA, preservatives, excess salt, etc. Also, it actually tastes good. If your baby doesn't eat all their food, you don't mind finishing it for them (can't say the same for the store-bought stuff). Logan will not eat store-bought veggies. He will eat store-bought fruit, which is fine by me - there are fruits available that I normally wouldn't buy and they are handy. I have some freezer trays and recipe books and I make most of my own baby food and freeze it (veggies and some fruits). We haven't tried any meats yet (he gets his iron from his baby cereal/pablum and formula). I also have a little food grinder (sort of like this one) that I think I'm going to start using. It's basically for making single-servings of food. You can grind up meat, veggies, fruit... whatever you are eating and feed it to baby. It's small enough that you can take it with you to a restaurant if you're eating out and baby is with you. Soon he'll start getting more textured foods, but I'm not ready for that yet! ;)
What else to tell you? Hmmm... I'm working 1/2 a day per week (Monday mornings) and then I sometimes take a little bit of work home with me for the week. I enjoy my time in the office - it keeps me connected (I was feeling very disconnected from my office), keeps my brain a little sharper, and gives me a little bit of time with adults! This way I can ease my way back into work slowly. After the September long weekend, I plan to work 3 days per week. Since my employer allows me to work 1/2 a day per week, I don't think they'll have a problem with my working 3 days per week!
Well, this post is getting long-winded (though sorely over due). Here are some pictures for those who aren't on Facebook:
